Material in picture: PEEK

There are many types of plastics. Each plastic is an ideal solution for different challenges. The possibilities and applications are virtually endless. Lakwijk is there to be a guide in the world of plastics. Every now and then we put a specific material in the spotlight. Today that is PEEK.

KETRON PEEK

The family of KETRON PEEK materials is based on polyetheretherketone polymer. This semi-crystalline plastic, which exhibits a unique combination of very good mechanical properties, high temperature resistance and excellent chemical resistance, is today the most popular 'Advanced Engineering Plastic'.

KETRON PEEK grades offer chemical and hydrolysis resistance comparable to PPS, but can also operate at higher temperatures. PEEK 1000 provides steam and abrasion resistance, while carbon-reinforced PEEK provides excellent abrasion resistance. PEEK can be used continuously up to 250° Celsius and in hot water or steam without permanent loss of physical properties. For hostile environments, PEEK is a very strong alternative to fluoropolymers. PEEK has a VO flammability rating and exhibits very low smoke and toxic gas emissions when exposed to flame.

KETRON PEEK 1000 NATURAL

This general purpose material is unreinforced and offers the highest stretch, toughness and impact strength of all PEEK types. The composition of the raw materials used for the manufacture of these natural semi-finished products complies with the guidelines and regulations of the European Union and the American FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) regarding the use of plastics for parts that come into contact with food. These properties make KETRON PEEK 1000 natural (brown-gray) a very popular material in the medical, pharmaceutical and food industries.

Benefits of PEEK:

  • Very high maximum permissible operating temperature in air (250°C continuously up to 310°C for short-term use)
  • High mechanical strength, stiffness and creep resistance, even at high temperatures
  • Excellent chemical and hydrolysis resistance
  • Good sliding properties and excellent wear resistance
  • Very high dimensional stability
  • Intrinsic flame retardancy and very low smoke development during combustion
  • Good electrical insulating and dielectric properties
  • Excellent resistance to high-energy radiation (gamma and X-rays)

KETRON PEEK is a good candidate for producing vacuum tube handles during semiconductor manufacturing. They usually come into contact with heat and commonly used process chemicals. In applications ranging from the aerospace industry to oil drilling, components made from PEEK improve performance and reliability.
