Material in picture: PVDF

There are many types of plastics. Each plastic is an ideal solution for different challenges. The possibilities and applications are virtually endless. Lakwijk is there to be a guide in the world of plastics. Every now and then we put a specific material in the spotlight. Today that is PVDF.

PVDF

PVDF is the abbreviation for polyvinylidene fluoride. The material has higher tensile strength, compressive strength and dimensional stability than the related PTFE. However, the friction and insulation properties are lower. PVDF has high mechanical strength and toughness at lower temperatures and is self-extinguishing. The operating temperature ranges from -30°C to +150°C. PVDF exhibits high resistance to chlorine, bromine and high-energy radiation.

Advantages of PVDF:

  • High tensile strength
  • High mechanical strength
  • High stiffness (also at low temperatures)
  • High chemical resistance
  • Very low water absorption
  • Good friction & wear values
  • Self-extinguishing
  • High UV resistance
  • Toxic fumes upon combustion
  • Relatively high coefficient of thermal expansion

PVDF is a good candidate for gaskets, pump and seal bodies, rotation discs, (control) valves, extraction centrifuges, equipment, sliding rails, gears, guide rails and wheels, adapters, components in the electrical industry and medical technology, dosing stations, filter frames, flanges, etc. & cuffs, roller conveyors and adjustment clamps.
