Material in picture: PTFE

There are many types of plastics. Each plastic is an ideal solution for different challenges. The possibilities and applications are virtually endless. Lakwijk is there to be a guide in the world of plastics. Every now and then we put a specific material in the spotlight. Today that is PTFE.

PTFE

Since 1938, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) has been the plastic used for a wide variety of products. PTFE is often used for critical applications where high temperatures, chemical resistance and low friction are required.

Advantages of PTFE:

  • Very low coefficient of friction
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Non-stick slip properties (hardly any adhesion)
  • Wide temperature usage: -200°C to +260°C
  • Excellent flexibility
  • UV-resistant (does not age)
  • Not hygroscopic (water absorption < 0.01%)
  • Virtually chemically inert
  • Flame retardant (non-flammable)
  • Foods suitable (food grade)

Components made from PTFE are ideally suited for applications ranging from the aviation industry and automotive to fluid handling systems, semiconductor industry, packaging and food industry, oil, gas and petrochemicals. The widely applicable PTFE is available in sheet, rod and tube.
