Plastic bonding is a technique in which plastic components are permanently joined using adhesive, creating a clean and seamless connection. Bonding plastics is a process in which two or more plastic parts are durably joined together using a suitable adhesive. This joining method makes it possible to combine plastics without mechanical fasteners such as screws or bolts, resulting in a neat and seamless finish.

In doing so, we consider not only the joint itself, but also factors such as strength, transparency, watertightness, and the conditions under which the part will be used.

When is plastic bonding suitable?

Bonding is particularly advantageous when a joint needs to be neat and visually appealing. Compared to plastic welding or mechanical fastening, bonding is often faster, easier, and results in a more aesthetically pleasing finish. This is a significant advantage, especially with transparent plastics: the joint remains seamless, and the appearance of the final product is preserved.

That is why plastic bonding is widely used for products that are visibly installed in a machine or system. Examples include transparent protective covers, shields, or plastic housings where the joint should not stand out unnecessarily.

Bonding transparent plastics

UV adhesive is often used for transparent plastics, such as polycarbonate and acrylic (PMMA). This adhesive creates a clear, clean bond and cures quickly under UV light. This makes the technique ideal for parts where the finish is clearly visible, such as machine covers or guards.

Proper bonding requires precision work. The parts must be positioned correctly, and the adhesive must flow smoothly into the joint. Only then is the bond cured with UV light. Once the adhesive has cured, the part is immediately secured.

When should we choose a different adhesive?

Not every application requires the same adhesive. When a joint needs to be watertight, UV adhesive isn’t always the best choice. In that case, a two-component adhesive may be more suitable. UV adhesive is also often not an option for dark or non-translucent plastics, because the UV light cannot reach the adhesive joint effectively.

In addition, materials such as PVC are also bonded, for example, in technical parts made up of multiple components. Which adhesive is most suitable always depends on the material and the function of the final product.

How does the bonding process work?

Proper bonding begins with careful preparation. The parts must fit well, be clean, and be positioned correctly. Where necessary, surfaces are cleaned or degreased so that the adhesive can bond properly.

Next, the adhesive is carefully applied to the joint. With UV adhesive, the adhesive bead is placed so that the adhesive flows smoothly between the parts. Only when the joint is fully filled and looks neat is it cured with UV light. From that moment on, the part is securely bonded and cannot shift.

For more complex parts, a test piece or test bonding may be performed first. This allows us to assess in advance how the material will react and how the joint can be executed in the most aesthetically pleasing and reliable manner.

What do we look for when bonding plastics?

Preparation is key when bonding plastics. The surfaces must be clean and fit together properly. Where necessary, parts are cleaned or degreased to ensure the adhesive bonds effectively.

Environmental factors can also influence the result. With transparent parts, for example, we pay attention to static charge, as this can affect the flow of the adhesive. That is why, in some cases, ionizing air is used to reduce static charge.

We also consider the component’s intended application in advance. Will it be used indoors or outdoors? Is transparency important? Will the component come into contact with moisture or chemicals? And should the joint be primarily aesthetically pleasing, or rather functional and strong?

Plastic bonding as part of custom manufacturing

At Lakwijk, plastic bonding is often combined with other processes, such as milling and bending. Consider, for example, a transparent cover that is first milled into shape, then bent, and finally bonded to form a complete end product.

Because every application is different, we’re happy to work with you to determine the best joining method. Sometimes bonding is the best choice because of the clean finish. In other cases, welding or mechanical fastening is more suitable, for example, when strength or watertightness is more important than appearance.
