Applications of curved plastic
Curved plastic is often used for functional parts that combine form, protection, and visibility. Examples include transparent machine covers, protective shields, or parts that serve as protective housings.
At Lakwijk, we primarily bend plastic for applications in mechanical engineering. In addition, other custom solutions are also possible, such as boat windows, market canopies, or technical covers for specific applications. Hot and cold plastic bending
Plastic can be bent using either hot or cold methods. In hot bending, the material is heated locally. This creates a bend line where the material becomes malleable and can be shaped in a controlled manner.
In cold forming, the material is shaped without heating. This is done using force to bend the material to the desired angle. Not every plastic is suitable for this; some materials must be hot-bent to prevent breakage or cracking.
Lakwijk performs both hot bending and cold forming in-house. Which technique is most suitable depends on the material, thickness, shape, and application of the part. That is why expert advice is crucial for determining the right technique.
Which plastics can be bent?
Transparent plastics are often used for plastic bending. At Lakwijk, these include:
Polycarbonate is widely used for protective covers and shields in mechanical engineering. The material is suitable when visibility is important, such as for a transparent cover around a machine. Acrylic (PMMA) is also used for clear applications, but requires extra care during bending because it can be more prone to cracking.
PETG can also be bent, depending on the application. The choice of material always depends on the component’s function and the conditions under which it is used.

What do we consider when bending plastic?
When bending plastic, it’s not just the shape that matters. The material’s behavior also plays a major role. That’s why we carefully assess the part’s intended application beforehand. Does the part need to be transparent? Will it be subjected to forces? Will it be used indoors or outdoors? And will the part need to be glued or mechanically fastened later on?
In addition, we consider the thickness of the material, the length of the bend, and the desired shape. Thicker material or small folded edges require extra attention. Careful work is also necessary for long bends or thin sheets to prevent deformation.
By carefully evaluating these factors in advance, we determine which bending technique and material selection best suit the desired end result.
