Several plastics are available in a transparent version. PVC and polystyrene are available in transparent grades, but the most commonly used transparent plastics are polycarbonate (such as PC Makroclear, PC Makrolife and PC 1000), acrylic and PETG. These materials are often used as an alternative to glass. Transparent plastics are impact-resistant or even unbreakable, lightweight, easy to bend both hot and cold, flexible and, in the case of PVC, highly chemically resistant.
Applications
Applications of transparent plastics include safety glazing, industrial strip curtains, protective covers, sight glasses, inspection windows, LED lighting and transparent partition walls. Please note that transparency does not always mean that a material is 100% clear or glass-like.
In addition, transparent plastics in coloured or mirrored versions are often used for decorative applications. Plastics are available in a wide range of colours, opal shades, LED-quality grades, high-gloss, satin or matt finishes, transparent colours, bronze-, gold- or silver-mirrored versions and many special finishes. These materials are used as a basis for lettering, displays, interior components, mirrors, boat windows, furniture, letters, art objects and countless other applications.
