UV adhesive versus two-component adhesive: which gluing method is right for your plastic component?

published on 28 August 2026 Reading time : 3 minutes

Gluing is a commonly used method for joining plastic components, particularly in the case of transparent products such as machine covers. However, gluing is not a single technique: at Lakwijk, we mainly use UV adhesive and two-component adhesive, and the choice between the two depends heavily on the application.

Before we recommend a gluingtechnique, we discuss with the customer what the part will be used for. Does it need to be watertight? Is the material transparent or coloured? And how quickly does the part need to be ready for further processing? Based on this, we determine which type of adhesive is most suitable.

Fast and crystal-clear gluing with UV adhesive

UV adhesive is applied to the joint between two components, where it flows in by capillary action. As soon as a UV lamp is shone on the adhesive joint, the adhesive cures instantly. No drying or curing time is required, meaning a component can be processed immediately.

We opt for UV adhesive when a component is transparent, such as polycarbonate or acrylic, and a visually appealing result is important. The adhesive joint is barely visible and the product remains crystal-clear. However, it is essential that sufficient UV light can pass through the material; UV adhesive therefore does not work with dark or non-translucent plastics.

One point to bear in mind for gluing with UV adhesive is water resistance. In the short term, a UV bond is highly resistant to moisture, but in the long term, its water resistance is not guaranteed.

UV adhesive versus two-component adhesive: which gluing method is right for your plastic component?

Waterproof and non-transparent joints using two-component adhesive

Two-component adhesive cures through a chemical reaction between two components, rather than through UV light. As a result, this adhesive is not dependent on light transmission and can also be used with dark or coloured plastics.

We opt for two-component adhesive when a joint needs to be truly watertight, for example, for parts that come into contact with moisture. It is also the logical choice for non-transparent materials, such as black acrylic, as UV light cannot pass through them to activate the adhesive.

The choice always depends on your application

As well as the type of adhesive, environmental factors also play a role in the gluing process. Static charge, for example, can cause the adhesive to flow out too much, which is why Lakwijk uses ionised air to prevent this. Humidity can also affect the working time.

No two applications are exactly the same. The correct bonding technique depends on transparency, watertightness and the conditions in which the component is used.

Are you unsure which bonding technique is best suited to your plastic component? Lakwijk would be happy to discuss the application with you and then advise on the most suitable bonding method. Please get in touch for tailored advice.
