Insulating your home with plastic secondary glazing

As a result of the energy crisis and the need to reduce gas consumption, we are noticing an increasing demand for secondary glazing. It is very easy to make a plastic secondary window yourself to add extra insulation to your home. A secondary window is an easy and budget-friendly way to properly insulate single-glazed windows. It is a simple way to reduce your energy consumption. It is an additional window that you simply place in front of your existing one. Besides providing insulation, secondary glazing also offers extra protection and improves soundproofing. For clear secondary windows, you can choose between two types of plastics:

• Acrylic, for example from the brand Plexiglas

• Polycarbonate, for example from the brand Arla

Acrylic is the most obvious choice. If protection against vandalism or burglary is also required, polycarbonate is the better option. In addition, polycarbonate is self-extinguishing.

The thermal conductivity coefficient indicates how well a material insulates. The lower this value, the better the insulation performance. Acrylic has a thermal conductivity of 0.19 W/(k·m) and polycarbonate 0.20 W/(k·m). This is significantly lower than the conductivity of single glass (float glass), which has a value of 0.80 W/(k·m). Plastic secondary glazing is therefore an easy way to save energy!
