Material in picture: PTFE

There are many types of plastics. Every plastic is an ideal solution for different challenges. The possibilities and applications are virtually endless. Lakwijk is there to guide you in the world of plastics. Every now and then we put a specific material in the spotlight. Today that is PTFE.

PTFE

Since 1938, PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) has been the plastic that is used for a wide variety of products. PTFE is often used for critical applications where high temperatures, chemical resistance and low friction are required.

Advantages of PTFE:

  • Very low coefficient of friction
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Non-stick slip properties (barely adherence)
  • Wide temperature use: -200 °C to +260 °C
  • Excellent flexibility
  • UV resistant (does not age)
  • Not hygroscopic (water absorption < 0.01%)
  • Virtually chemically inert
  • Flame-retardant (non-flammable)
  • Foods suitable (food grade)

Components made of PTFE are ideally suited for applications ranging from the aerospace industry and automotive to the liquid treatment systems, semiconductor industry, packaging and food industry, oil, gas and petrochemicals. The widely applicable PTFE is available in sheet, rod and tube.
